To Write or Not to Write

By Erika Petrelli On Monday, May 7, 2018 no Comments · In connection, humanity, Wings & Whimsy

So I missed writing last week (again) because of a booked up week of west coast travels.  I was about to miss today (again) because of a red-eye flight that got me in this morning, another training, and a parent information night at my daughter’s soon-to-be-new school.

But then I thought “uh-oh.”  It’s so easy to stop once you stop.

You know?

And I don’t want to stop talking to you.  I love talking to you.  And I have a lot of updates and have had more than a few “oh wow” moments in the past few months.

Every Monday I have a hundred reasons not to write.

But there is the one most important reason to write. It connects us. It connects me to you, and you to each other. It reminds us we’re not alone in whatever we might be thinking and feeling and going through. Well, at least it reminds me.

And it occurred to me tonight that even if not a single one of you would even notice if I stopped writing to you, even if you were like “where did that girl go? Eh, oh well…”, that that lost connection would matter to me, a lot.

So, hello at past-8:00 on a Monday night. It’s still Monday. And I’m still here.

I’m sure you have a thing, too. A thing that connects you to humanity, whether humanity realizes you’re connecting with them through that thing or not.  Music, writing, speaking, gardening, drawing, dancing, volunteering. Protesting, going to the coffee shop, preparing the home for guests.  Sharing resources with someone who could use them, running in a 5K, going to a concert.  There is something, that when you’re doing it, makes you feel like you are part of something bigger.  Makes you feel like you are not alone.

You need to tend to those things like you tend to your life, because they fuel you, whether you realize it or not. Because in the end, it doesn’t matter if humanity doesn’t realize that’s your way of connecting with them… the only thing that matters is that you know you’re connecting.  It’s your tether.  And when you find a tether, hold on tight.

What’s your “thing”?   Don’t stop, even when it’s easy to.  Remember, it’s for you. (And the rest of us are the luckiest ones to receive whatever it is you are offering)
