May In My Heart

It’s May It’s May It’s May!

As I may have told you once or two hundred times, I loooovvveeee the month of May. It’s like the whole world comes (back) to life once May arrives. Or maybe just I do.

Where I live, March and April are the months that sluggishly and half-heartedly try to slough off winter and slowly grumble their way towards spring…. But MAY.  May is like “GAME ON, SUCKERS!!!!!!!” The days are longer, the sun is brighter, the green things are greener, the fruit and veggies are fresher.  My favorite sounds are all around me—the chirping of the  birds, the crack of a baseball bat, the rumble of a race car engine, the buzzing of a lawn mower, the twinkling songs of the wind chimes. The anticipation of summer is palpable as schools round the corner to the finish line, pools start to be filled, and windows open. It’s not too hot or humid yet, and even the marching army of ants seeking food and shelter in the house are still cute.

I’m seriously like a skipping girl in a dress with a basket full of flowers that I’m flinging this way and that, shouting “It’s May It’s May It’s May!!!!”

That’s my relationship with May. Maybe you have a completely different one. Maybe you don’t pay a single lick of attention to May. Maybe November is your jam. Or you love a good splash of July. And that’s cool…   and also probably telling about what you need, about what fills your soul-bucket.

It’s clear that I’m madly in love with May. May FILLS my soul-bucket. So how do I bottle up May so that I can access it at other times—like in February which I most definitely do NOT love. Or September which I try to be grateful for but usually just end up complaining about the yellowjackets and the heat that seems will never end.

Meaning: there are the things we love in life. We usually know what those things are. But how often do we just passively wait for those things- skipping delightedly when they happen to show up, and pouting dejectedly when they inevitably leave?

I say no more to that! Friends, go get after that which you love. Find it, plant it, cultivate it, remember it. Create it within your own heart so that on the dark days you still might be able to find that sparkle of light.

As Goethe is quoted as saying “A man sees in the world what he carries in his heart.”

If I carry May in my heart, the whole world looks like May to me.

What’s your May? And how can you carry it in your heart?
